The Importance of Fiber in your DietAs far as our general health, fitness, and overall well-being is concerned, it can’t be denied that our diets play a crucial role in determining just how healthy, or unhealthy, we actually are. Most of us simply aren’t eating enough healthy and beneficial ingredients, and unfortunately our health is paying the price. One food source which many people seem to overlook, despite the fact that it’s extremely beneficial for a whole variety of reasons, is dietary fiber. Fiber does so much more than just keep you regular, and some would even go as far as to say that it’s a life saver. Whatever your opinions on it may be, it can’t be denied that the health benefits it possesses, mean that you should do all that you can to ensure you get enough  fiber in your diet.

It’s great for heart health – Heart disease is actually the biggest killer in the entire world, meaning that more people die from heart disease, or heart health complications, than any other disease or illness in the world. Experts recommend eating a diet which consists of plenty of soluble and insoluble fiber. The insoluble fiber has been proven to reduce the risk of heart disease and heart health complications, whilst soluble fiber has been found to lower the amounts of bad cholesterol in the body, which can contribute heavily towards cardiovascular problems.

It can help promote weight loss – Let’s face it, with summer fast approaching, most of us could probably do with losing a few pounds. The great thing about consuming enough fiber, is that you can. Foods which are rich in fiber, vegetables and bran etc, tend to be lower in calories, meaning less calories in, less fat to store. On top of that, fiber is also much slower to digest than other foods, meaning that it’s a great appetite suppressant due to the fact that it takes so long to digest, keeping you feeling fuller for longer. The fuller you feel, the less you’ll eat, and the less you’ll want to eat.

Fiber is great for preventing diseases – Another reason that fiber is so beneficial is the fact that it’s so great for the colon, the intestines, and the stomach. It helps to rid the body of toxins, which are commonly found in these locations. The less toxins there are, the less chance there is of a disease or illness, including cancer, from occurring. As well as that, many foods rich in fiber, fruits and vegetables especially, are all jam-packed full of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, all of which strengthen the immune system and help to destroy pathogens before they have chance to affect us.
