Simple Ways to Boost Brain Power

Simple Ways to Boost Brain PowerWe all know that exercise and diet leads to a healthy body but so often we forget about the most powerful and arguably most important part of your body… the brain. If you find yourself feeling scatterbrained and worn down chances are you could use a boost to help amp up your memory, sharpness and over mental acuity. Here are the latest foods and activities you should be doing to help boost brain power.

When it comes to food and brain power you can’t beat the Omega-3’s. Fish oil fats have a protective effect on the brain and can minimize the damage caused by diets with a predominance of junk food. In other word, it reduces the oxidative stress on the brain. It is the anti-oxidant effect of the omega 3 fatty acids in fish oils and fats that counteract the damaging free radicals which result from “bad foods”. One key Omega 3 fatty acid that accounts for 97% of Omega 3’s found in the brain is known as DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) which is a key competent in brain development of infants as well as aging adults.

Nourishing brain ‘super’ foods:
• The rich source of anti-oxidants in blue berries, strawberries and pomegranates. These spare the brain from oxidative stress.
• Wild salmon has a high concentration of omega 3 fatty acid. Blood flow is enhanced as the omega prevent the formation of plaques in the blood vessels.
• Whole grains are rich in Vitamin E and omega fatty acids, both protect the body from cardiovascular disease.
• Avocado has mono saturated fats which are good for the blood vessels.
• Beans help to normalize the blood sugar as the brain cells need twice the amount of energy when compared with the cells of other tissues.
• Teas are particularly good especially when freshly brewed.

Activities that boost Brain Function and Power:
All types of puzzles, quizzes and games are being promoted to enhance memory and focus. It is believed that keeping the brain challenged in this activity could delay or even prevent Alzheimer’s disease.

Some of the puzzles are word or picture based. Also logic sequencing in games are proving to be quite popular. In other words do mental activities daily that challenge you to engage in problem solving.

Another great way to exercise your brain is to challenge yourself to remember things. For example before we had cell phones you probably remembered at least 20 phone numbers of your closest friends and family. Now if you could name more than 3 you would be lucky. Make an effort to remember a handful of numbers you call regularly and manually dial them  as opposed to clicking on your saved contacts.
