Now, it’s probably safe to say that no matter how big and tough you may consider yourself to be, the chances are that the thought of visiting the dentist still fills you with feelings of dread and despair. There’s just something about the dentists that we as the human race simply find terrifying. Perhaps it’s the smell of disinfectant topped off with subtle minty undertones that we dislike? Or perhaps, and this is more likely, it’s the awful looking equipment that they use on your teeth, which would appear more at home in a medieval torture chamber somewhere Not only that, but certain dental procedures take both time, and money, and very few of us are blessed with too much of either. Whatever our reasons for our dental phobias may be, there’s a very logical and seemingly very easy way to ensure you never have to see one again, and that is to simply take the best possible care of your teeth that you can.
Obviously, a great place to start would be to brush your teeth at least twice a day, with a toothpaste that’s proven to be especially effective. After that, using an electric toothbrush is another great thing you can do. After that, both mouth wash and dental floss can both help to drastically improve the overall health and appearance of your teeth. Diet is also an extremely important factor. For instance, if you eat too much sugar, then the sugar could literally rot your teeth. But what about foods which we’re actually encouraged to eat? Well, recently there has been very strong evidence to suggest that cheese, yes cheese, could very well help to protect the enamel on your teeth.
How can cheese help protect my teeth?
At first, you may think that eating cheese to help protect your teeth sounds absolutely absurd. But then, if you take a moment to think about it a little more, it probably won’t sound as ridiculous as you may at first have thought. We all know that calcium is great for our teeth and bones right, and we know that milk is one of, if not the best source of calcium on the planet. Now, where does cheese come from? Yep, you got it, cheese comes from milk and all of a sudden, everything suddenly starts to sound a great deal more rational. Studies have found that cheese actually helps to protect our teeth against acid erosion and decay in a very simple manner. In our mouths, the PH levels are slightly acidic already. Now, when we eat and drink things that are even more acidic, then these PH levels will drop even lower and become even more acidic, and this is when the enamel on our teeth becomes damaged. Studies have found that cheese contains calcium and other properties which actually help to restore PH levels in our mouths for around 30 minutes after we consume it. That means that each time we eat cheese, the PH in our mouths begins to become less and less acidic for around 30 minutes, thus helping to prevent damage to the tooth enamel.
This doesn’t mean you should consume your bodyweight in cheese either. Cheese is still high in fat, which we all know is bad for us, and various studies have found that all that is required to help boost your PH levels is around a third of an ounce serving of cheese. The good news is that if you are worried about gaining weight, then don’t, because low-fat versions are just as effective as full-fat versions.
