If you’re trying to watch your weight, or even if you’re trying to lose weight for that matter, the last thing you’re going to want is to constantly feel hungry every hour or so, and for good reason too. Feeling hungry can make us miserable, it makes us angry and irritable, it prevents us from being able to function correctly, and it also makes us more likely to binge eat, which is exactly what you don’t want if you’re watching your weight. Obviously when we’re hungry this is the body’s way of telling us that it needs more energy, but if this is a frequent occurrence then you’re going to struggle to keep your calories under control. To help ensure this doesn’t happen however, there are a number of healthy and balanced food sources that we can consume, that have been proven to not only give us all of the nutrients that we require, but to also help keep us feeling full for longer.
Oatmeal – If you’re looking for a healthy and balanced way of starting your day, then a bowl of oatmeal is absolutely ideal. Oatmeal is a great source of slow releasing, slow digesting carbohydrates that will gradually release nutrients into the body over a prolonged period of time, rather than all at once. Oatmeal is also a great source of B vitamins, folate, fiber, and minerals including zinc as well.
Vegetable soup – Vegetable soup is an absolutely fantastic food to consume if you’re looking to manage your weight, control your calories, increase your nutrient intake, and keep you feeling full for longer. The reason for this is that obviously the soup is full of vegetables, which are packed full of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other nutrients that the body adores. Many vegetables, especially root vegetables, are much slower to be digested and broken down than other foods, which is why vegetable soup is ideal for helping to keep you feeling full for longer.
Chia seeds – Chia seeds are fantastic for people looking to manage their weight and improve their health and well-being because they’re full of antioxidants, fibre, vitamins, omega 3’s, and protein as well. They’re also great at keeping us feeling full for longer because once consumed, when they reach the stomach, they swell up and expand and form a gel like consistency that lines the stomach and takes a long time to be broken down. They’re ideal because they don’t have much taste and so can be added to almost any dish to help bulk it out and to increase the nutrient content.
Apples – You know what people say about an apple a day right? Well, they weren’t lying because apples are great as they’re full of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, but on top of that, they also help to keep us feeling full due to the fact they’re so rich in natural fiber. The fiber, just as the chia seeds, actually expands in the stomach, making us feel as if we’ve consumed a large meal, thus helping to keep hunger at bay.
