Ever heard people talking about how “a good night’s sleep can solve most things”? If you have then you probably know that a good night’s sleep can make a world of difference when it comes to helping to improve the way you feel the following day. Sleep is absolutely vital and if we don’t get enough of it we run the risk of becoming seriously, seriously ill as a result. If you thought that you were ok on just three or four hours sleep a night, then you need a reality check, because despite what some people may tell you, that simply isn’t enough. Sleep deprivation can cause a whole host of various health problems and conditions which is why we need to ensure that we get our sleeping routines in check sooner rather than later.
It weakens the immune system – Have you ever noticed how people who are tired and run down are often more susceptible to viruses and illnesses, and will often suffer from common colds, flu, or tonsillitis perhaps? This is no coincidence, as study after study have revealed that people that don’t get enough sleep often suffer from a poor immune system, leaving them open to all sorts of illnesses, viruses, and diseases, some of which can be potentially serious. Aim for between 7 and 9 hours sleep a night, and try to go to bed and get up at exactly the same time every day. The body loves routine.
It can lead to urinary problems – A recent study carried out in 2011, revealed that men who slept for an average of less than 5 hours a night, were 80% more likely to suffer from a weakened bladder resulting in them having to urinate more frequently. Inflammation is believed to be the result of this, and surprise, surprise, inflammation is a common side effect associated with not getting enough sleep.
Sleep deprivation drastically increases your chances of contracting colon cancer – Another extremely worrying side effect associated with a lack of sleep, is the fact that individuals who slept for an average of less than 5 hours per night, were up to 47% more likely to contract colorectal polyps, which can often then turn cancerous.
Sleep deprivation kills sex drive – Let’s face it, we enjoy sex when we can get it, so not being in the mood for it will be a pretty disconcerting prospect indeed. Studies have found that not only can a lack of sleep kill your sex drive and libido, but it can also lower your testosterone levels. In a recent study, results found that men who suffered from sleep deprivation and didn’t clock enough hours of sleep, all also possessed abnormally low levels of natural testosterone.
