As we all know, getting quality sleep is important every night for many different reasons. It is recommended that as a grown adult you should get 8 hours of sleep on average nightly, but unfortunately, this is not the case for many people. Many people struggle to get to sleep each night and then find it difficult to stay asleep, which can have a negative effect on their health and wellbeing. If you are one of these people, or if you feel like you are not getting enough hours of sleep every night, here are a few reasons why getting enough sleep every night is important.
One of the most important reasons why you should get enough quality sleep every night is so you have enough energy the next day. Your energy and productivity levels the following day will depend on how many hours of sleep that you got the night before and what that quality of sleep was like. When you have a sleep debt you will begin to feel less productive, and you will also find it difficult to concentrate throughout the day. Sleep debt refers to the difference between the amount of sleep that you should be getting every night and the amount that you actually get. So, making sure that you do not accumulate a sleep debt will ensure that you feel productive throughout the day and can concentrate on all of the tasks that you have to complete.
As well as feeling productive the next day, another important reason why you should get enough sleep every night is so you can feel active. Like previously mentioned, your energy levels will greatly depend on how much sleep you get each night, so to make sure that you feel energized you must get enough sleep. Your energy levels will greatly impact how active you are throughout the day. For example, if you are an athlete or like to workout frequently you must get enough hours of sleep every night in order to be active. Poor quality sleep is known to be associated with poor exercise performance and even functional limitation; therefore, it is important that you get enough sleep each night.
The quality and the quantity of sleep that you get every night can have a huge impact on how you feel the following day. Slept debt can highly affect your emotions and can often leave you feeling low or sad. It is known that lack of sleep is linked to mental health issues such as depression and anxiety, which unfortunately many people suffer from. Many people who feel low or depressed from time to time find themselves struggling to sleep every night, which in extreme cases can lead to them developing sleeping disorders. These could include insomnia or obstructive sleep apnea. If you find yourself feeling sad or low throughout the day, try to improve your sleeping pattern every night to boost your mood.
As we are all aware, lack of sleep can have a huge affect on our health and wellbeing and can sometimes be the cause of some major health risks. In order to stay healthy and avoid certain health risks, it is recommended that you get a good quality sleep of between 7 and 8 hours every night. For those who sleep less than 7 hours or finding themselves having a poor sleep every night there is actually a higher chance of them developing potential heart risks. These heart risks are extremely concerning and could include developing heart disease or even experiencing a stroke. Therefore, it is extremely important to get a solid nights sleep every night of up to 8 hours if possible.
Another health condition that is linked to lack of sleep is diabetes. If you are struggling to sleep at night or are experiencing a sleep disorder such as insomnia or obstructive sleep apnea, there may be a higher chance of you developing diabetes. The amount of sleep that you get every night can actually affect your glucose metabolism. This is the process of carbs breaking down into simple sugars which the body then turns into glucose. This produced glucose then flows through your blood to the cells. To put it simply, the less that you sleep the less of a chance that your body has to break down these simple sugars. This can ultimately lead to you developing type 2 diabetes. It is said that improving the quality and increasing the hours that you sleep every night can greatly help to resolve systems and reduce your risk of developing diabetes in as littles as one week.
Believe it or not, the amount of sleep that you get each night can actually have an effect on the number of calories that you consume within a day. Many studies have shown that people who are sleep deprived or struggle to sleep each night actually develop a bigger appetite, therefore consume more calories the following day. Lack of quality sleep is known to disrupt the daily fluctuations in your appetite hormones, meaning you will feel hungrier the day after. Getting enough sleep each night can help to regulate and take control of the calories that you consume each day. When your calories are controlled, it can actually lead to less of a chance of you putting on or gaining weight.
Another important reason why you should get enough sleep every night is because it can actually improve your immune system. Your immune system is what helps to keep your body healthy and can prevent you from getting sick easily. If you find that you often feel sick or you develop a cold easily, it could be a sign that you are not getting enough sleep. Lack of sleep can weaken your immune system, which means you will get sick quicker and easier than others who sleep more than 8 hours every single night.
The quality and quantity of sleep that you get every night can have a major effect on the level of inflammation in your body, which is linked to your immune system. Your immune system creates inflammation in your body which then protects your body from developing infections, getting injured easily, or reduces the chance of you developing diseases. Poor quality sleep and lack of sleep has been linked to developing long-term inflammation and even inflammatory bowel disease. To reduce the risk of you developing these issues you should make sure that you are getting enough sleep every night.
As you can see there are many reasons why getting enough sleep every night is so important. Not only is getting a high-quality night’s sleep vital for keeping your body healthy and active, but it is also extremely important for our minds. So, if you are someone who struggles with sleeping every night, try adopting some new sleeping habits in order to improve the quality of your sleep, which will ultimately lead to you feeling healthier and happier.
