Right after the holiday season is over it generally means excessive amounts of fatty, greasy, processed food as well as alcohol and sugary soft drinks. While these foods and drinks can taste pretty nice as a little treat, if you consume too many of them, you will soon pay the price around your waistline and in other ways too. It’s no surprise that many gyms and health clubs see such a dramatic increase in new clients in the beginning of the New Year with hefty weight loss goals. Every year people binge on greasy fatty foods, and pile on the pounds and then regret it. As we grow older, the weight becomes harder and harder to get rid of. Being overweight is not simply a matter of not looking as good aesthetically it also has a whole host of other health risks involved with it, including the fact that carrying that extra weight can be bad for your joints, and can cause you to live your life in constant pain and discomfort.
How does weight affect our joints?
The answer is actually pretty simple and straightforward, and there’s no real science or other spectacular research involved. The heavier you are, the more strain your joints are forced to take. For example, overweight people tend to especially suffer with joint pains in their knees. This is because their knees are the joints which are forced to carry all of their weight. The human body is designed to be able to work most efficiently when it is at its optimal weight, for somebody of a certain height. This means it can support and carry that weight with no problems whatsoever. As it grows heavier however, it begins to struggle as time goes by, and these joints can become damaged, inflamed and worn down. People who are overweight often experience back pain as well, often lower back pain known as Lumbago. Again, this is because the back is sensitive, and the lower back downwards, is forced to bear the brunt of the weight of the entire upper body.
How can losing weight help?
Again, this too is very simple and straight forward. Say you gain 25 pounds over the course of a few months. You are now walking around with an extra 25 pounds of weight pushing down on all of your joints, and all of the muscles in your body. To get an idea of how much extra weight that is, try walking around with a 25 pound weight in a backpack for a few hours. Remove the weight, and see how much easier it is to get around. Well, that’s exactly the same principle as if you’re 25 pounds overweight, or overweight by any amount for that matter. The less pressure and strain you put on your joints and muscles, the more pain free, agile, flexible, and mobile you’ll become as a result.
